Why You Should Move to Ireland
Besides beautiful scenery, friendly people and a rich culture, Ireland offers a multitude of career opportunities. With a corporate tax rate that is one of the lowest in the EU and generous R&D tax credits on offer, Ireland has attracted many international tech, engineering and biopharma industries to the country, creating great potential for tech talent to forge their careers at the forefront of their industries.
“The life sciences market in Ireland is still very buoyant,” says Adam Chapman, Account Director at European Recruitment “there’s been a lot of expansion by some of the largest Pharma companies globally, with new sites being opened up in locations like Limerick.”
Patricia McCarthy, from Relocco, a relocation company (www.relocco.ie) that works with many of European Recruitment’s clients in Ireland, helps settle in new employees, particularly across the West of Ireland. She notes multiple benefits and challenges of moving to Ireland.
The lack of pollution, quality produce and excellent schooling are great draw-cards to the country. But even more-so, she finds that people are struck by how quickly they are able to form real connections. “It can be a new experience for those who have moved from larger cities abroad, that they’re made to feel so welcome,” she says.
Cities like Dublin, Cork, Derry and Limerick still maintain the culture and amenities available in other larger European cities. “You’ll find we have great restaurants and theatres, but the service is more personable,” she says.
Plus, Adam says, it’s a very international place to work. “Most of the companies we work with are incredibly diverse, with about 60% of employees having moved there from abroad,” he says.
Newcomers will be able to find something to suit their interests from tennis to book clubs. “You can find them all, just on a smaller scale,” she says. “In a city like Limerick, for instance, you have access to natural amenities and water sports with a one hour drive to the coast.”
Relocation Services in Ireland
Patricia advises anyone considering moving for an opportunity in Ireland to negotiate a relocation service with their company to help them move and settle in. Getting assistance with everything from housing, bank accounts, utilities, tax file numbers, schooling and spousal support are all services they can provide which helps ease the transition.
“It’s helpful to have someone on the ground who can give you quick honest answers,” she says.
Once a client has signed a contract, she sends them a needs assessment and prepares an introductory call to discuss their requirements in their move. An orientation upon arrival helps them get their bearings in their new home. “It’s important to prepare their expectations and build their trust,” she says.
She can help spouses with their job search as well. And with Ireland’s low unemployment rate, most spouses find work opportunities relatively easily.
Housing, she admits, can be a challenging, with many newcomers feeling they don’t get value for money in the major cities, but she is hopeful that in the next year that will change with a lot of new developments under construction across the country.
“Many of our clients offer great relocation support for talent moving to Ireland,” says Adam. He cites one client who offers three months’ rent reimbursed alongside the relocation support.
